With the –BER months in full swing and rains, flood, traffic is everywhere, malls are flock with shoppers, “carmageddon” taking over the road, you already thinking, how to get any shopping done for the coming season? Thankfully, online stores have taken the Philippines by storm, with fashion e-commerce site yours truly, Lazada, Zalora and other leading the charge. Now “window” shopping online is convenient, once you choose the item that you want, you can simply key in the needed information such as your name, delivery address, and then choose the payment option and then wait for your item to arrived at your doorstep.

But in reality, many of us are still cautious about the safety of shopping online. Unsure about the quality of goods, replacement and warranty claim and other benefits against the usually brick and mortar store. However, here are the 10 recommended tips to follow to create a safe online shopping experience:

Top Level Domain Lookup
Only shop at a known website address – be careful with fake websites that use popular domains but a different top-level domain (e.g. “.net” instead of “.com”).

Trust Signal

Other evidences for a safe page include the locked padlock in the status bar located at the bottom of the browser and the address field turning green. This can help you guarantee that you are buying from a trustworthy online store.

Read Privacy and Terms
Be careful with giving data away. Only provide the shopping portals with data they really need and never send credit card details via email.

Monitor Your Bank Statement
Check your bank statements regularly. Do not wait for the bill. There may be a high chance to acquire any stolen funds if frauds are reported within a certain time frame, usually 30 to 60 days.

Always use Anti-Virus Software
Secure your device. Costs for an Anti-Malware-Software are low and will prohibit inconvenient viruses, worms or Trojan horses.

Secure your Password
Use strong passwords with a good combination of letters, numbers and symbols and do not use them twice. Otherwise hackers may be able to break them and enter the personal account easily.

As much as Possible Avoid Public Terminal While Purchasing

However, if you must use public networks for online shopping use verified hotspots only and ensure no one gets a glance when you are inputting your private data. Hotspot shields increase the security level. Check about Google Chrome’s Incognito Mode, so that your data will not be permanently stored.

Keep an eye to Exclusive Offers
Check the credibility of offers, promising deals from dubious websites you receive via mail are most likely to be false.

Logout
Always log out of your browsing sessions and keep safe your payment details. Closing the browser is not enough to disable the access to the personal account and is an easy game for hackers.

Payment Options
Carefully choose your payment method. Debit cards are not safe enough for purchasing online. Credit cards offer a higher protection against identity theft. It is even safer to transfer money on a disposable card and use that one to pay the bill. COD (Cash-on-Delivery) is the safest because you can actually see the item before you pay for it.
